    Event  When he succeeded to the title in 1247 and after paying homage to King Henry III, he had livery of Chartley Castle and other lands from his mother's inheritance. He had accompanied the King to France in 1230 and sat in parliament the same year, and was now granted many favours, including free warren (hunting rights) to extensive lands.

    • Like his father he suffered badly from gout since his youth and always travelled in a litter. He was accidentally thrown from the litter into water whilst crossing a bridge in St Neots, Huntingdon. Although he escaped immediate death he never fully recovered and died after only 7 years as Earl.
