Left with no real inheritance or title John joined the Earl of Hertford and other rebellious Barons opposing the collection of subsidies for the crown. The ferment was allayed by the Magna Carta. In future no tax could be collected without the consent of parliament. The discontented lords were pardoned and John was especially named. He petitioned Pope Nicholas III to procure the lands taken from his father but was unsuccessful.
