    He matriculated in 1853, then gained a BA in 1854 and an MA in 1856, with a Gold Medal for Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. Leaving College in 1853 he took a mastership in a private school in Devonport for a year before becoming Maths Master at Queen's College, Taunton for a while and was a Lay Preacher but also pursued his studies in Hebrew, Greek and Biblical Studies via London University before being accepted at Richmond College. The leading Methodist Theological institution prepared him for Ordination, which occurred in 1862. But instead of becoming a circuit preached he remained there for 12 years as a Classics Teacher.
