    In Mar 1913 he entered the Royal Military College and his class graduated early. He was commissioned Lieutenant in the Permanent Military Forces in 1915. He arrived in France in Mar 1916 and saw action in the Somme. Promoted Captain, Aug 1916 and commander of the 13th Field Battery, Nov 1916. Appointed trainee Staff Captain in 11th Infantry Brigade's HQ, Feb 1917. Fought in battles of Messines and Ypres, Belgium. Promoted Brigade Major, Aug 1917. Took part in the defense of Amiens, the allied offensive and the attack on Hindelburg Line. Awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and twice mentioned in despatches by Sir Douglas Haig.  
    Occupation  1919 
    Returned to Australia in 1919, returning to Lieutenant and honorary Major in the PMF. Not promoted to full Major until 1935. At times he considered giving up the army and studying at night he qualified as an accountant. In 1937 he joined Army HQ in Melbourne. Promoted Lt Colonel in 1939 and in Dec of that year he embarked for Palestine.  
    War  1939 
    Promoted temporary Brigadier in Mar 1941 and appointed CBE. He fought in Greece in Apr 1941 and was Commander of Australian Forces on Crete in May 1941, where he faced desparate situations and was among the last to be evacuated. He was awarded a Bar to the DSO, 1941 and the Greek Military Cross, 1st class, in 1942. Appointed temporary Major General in Dec 1941 and returned to Australia to become Deputy Chief of General Staff. Promoted Major General, 1942, he then fought a major campaign in Papua New Guinea for which he was appointed a Companion of the Order of the Bath (CB) in 1943 and was awarded the US' Distinguished Service Cross in 1943. After recovering from polyneuritis (which at one time saw him on the dangerously ill list)and spending time at home, he flew north to assume command of the 6th Division. The Hudson aircraft he was travelling in crashed into the sea killing all on board. His body was recovered and he was buried in Cairns with full military honours. The esplanade at Trinity Beach, Cairns was called Vasey Esplanade in his honour. Mentioned in dispatches after his death.
