    Both James and Guy were attending Camberwell Grammar School in Class II, where James was first in English, Maths and Writing (improvement) and Guy was second in English and Maths, but shared a special prize for improvement in Writing. Perhaps it was felt that being twins they should get similar awards. It is interesting that there were two Vivian boys at the same school who also got prizes. In 1898 James was in Class III where he got prizes in Latin and French, whilst Guy appears to have been in Class IV where he got a prize for Progress.

    He was promoted from temporary Lieutenant (appointed 4 Dec 1914) to temporary Captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) on 4 Dec 1915. Initially he was a Battalion Medical Officer for the 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment at Cambridge. He was sent over to France in Jan 1916. He later became a Captain but his Army records give his name as James Vasey Fiddian. James was in the trenches during the Battle of the Somme and made sorties into no-man's land to treat and rescue the wounded. He later transferred to a Casualty Clearing Station 10 miles behind the line and then ran a Travelling Surgical Team. Towards the end of the war he was invalided back to England after a severe case of the flu.
